I have seen,  the students are  struggling to understand the concepts behind the web-services. Technology is to support process . So I suggest to know the process first to implement better technologies. Process will be similar to all technologies only syntax will be vary. So be strong in logic and process than Syntax .

Lets Start with the process 

ABCD is the company which will produce AC Machines.  ABCD company has its own marketing system, it has call center, Lead management system from where the Agents will call to different leads and make them to buy the products. ABCD has another application Account management which will maintain the customer Information, it will be used to maintain the billing and contract information.  Now ABCD has one more Application called Service management. This service management will be used by AC service center Agents to arrange a technician for repairs.  

Problem 1:   if service agent want to check if the customer has valid product or not then the information is not available in Service Management system, So he need to check with with Account management system.  Here there is a need of exchanging data in between systems.   Now the process of connecting two or more systems together is know as integration.  we will see the bellow image to have clear idea on reaming terminology used integrations. 

What is integration?

Ans: Integration is the process used to have data exchange in between two different applications.

 What is web-service?

 Ans: Web-services is the technology (service) used to integrate two different system.

What is the Rest / Soap / Other services?

Ans : These are different types of web services used for integration . 

What is the API

Ans: Application programmable interface ( Similar to end point url ) which was built using rest  / soap is know as API. Using this API requester can Directly communicate with the system.
